He: In his late-fifties, has escaped baldness in exchange for salt and pepper. He keeps active, or pretends to by the look of his Saturday athletic attire… A doctor on the prowl.
She: Early to mid-forties, newly divorced with children. In shape, she also keeps her “youth,” with preliminary lifts and injections; all necessary measures in Los Angeles… A woman ready for a weekend companion.
They: Are meeting for the first time after pre-qualifying emails and flirtations via an interactive matchmaker.
He: Is clearly into her, already skipping over basic introductions to push for a second date that evening.
She: Wishes she hadn’t told him that her daughters are out of town, but isn’t completely turned off. His career and their shared fondness of Santa Barbara varietals retains her engagement. Yet, she keeps the conversation neutral.
He: Can sense this, becomes nervous. He then exposes his lack of game…He asks her age.
She: Attempts to mask her disappointment and answers to be polite.
He: Wipes sweaty palms on his track pants and tries to salvage what’s left of a first impression, “Oh, you don’t look 45. I would know, I usually date women in their thirties.”
She: Is done, and takes a long sip from the only enjoyable part of the half-hour…An Earl Grey Soy Latte with honey, her favorite at the Coral Tree café in Brentwood.
The café gets its name from the native South African tree that grows all over the Brentwood area. With two other locations in Encino and Century City, it’s a destination for delightful coffee and tea concoctions, along with healthful scrambles, sandwiches and pastries.
The Brentwood location draws the uber-chic of the area, celeb regulars and hopeful e-lovers. Basically, the best people watching in LA… Find a nice spot on the awning-covered patio and watch it all go down.
